Perry Smith and Dick Hickock are two psychopaths who come to a small town in Kansas to murder a family In the book In cold Blood. The book is telling the actual story of these two and describes every detail about the event. While reading the book, you wonder how could two men do such a disgusting act. Well, Jim Fallon knows what happens to the mind’s of people like this.
Jim Fallon is a neurobiologist who has been teaching neuroscience at the University of California Irvine for the past 35 years. He studies the brain’s of psychopathic killers to find out why they do such heinous crimes. Jim has looked at more the 70 brains, and has found information as to how this happens. Damage is the main component in a killer's’ brain. In the Ted Talk, Jim states “how you end up with a Psychopath and a killer depends on exactly when the damage occurs.” He is saying that during development of the embryo, some kind of damage to the genes happens and it could decide whether the person will be sane or insane. The damage takes place at a very precise time in the person, so someone could of had damage to a gene, but if it wasn’t at the right time, they will turn out just fine. There is no exact time the damage has to take place, the timing varies in each and every person. Another thing is every killer’s brain didn’t have the exact same damage, but all the brain’s of mass killers did have damage to the orbital cortex, which is a section of your brain located just above the eye. Another component is the MAOA gene. The MAOA gene is a major violence gene that even some normal people have. It is usually carried down by family, and mothers are the usual carrier that give it to their child. This shows why there are more men than women who are psychotic since Males get the X-chromosome from their mother, while females get one from their mother and one from their father, limiting the females chance of getting the gene. From this information we now know why Dick and Perry are such brutal killers, and we can assume they have killers in the family because of the MAOA gene. We can now explain what in their minds is letting them do this and it has to do with their genes. |
