Clint Smith is a teacher and writer who is a well known poet. In this Ted Talk, Smith talks about how staying silent is not always a good thing. Clint mentions his experiences about staying silent. When he said nothing to a homeless man on the street, and watching a kid getting bullied.
silence has killed more people than helped. "Silence is Rwandan genocide. Silence is Katrina. It is what you hear when there aren't enough body bags left. It is the sound after the noose is already tied. It is charring. It is chains. It is privilege. It is pain." If people in those instances spoke up, history would be different. More people would be alive. This Ted Talk relates to Juror 8 and how he didn't stay silent. If juror 8 decided not to voice his opinion, the boy would of been guilty, and it would of haunted 8 that he never spoke up. Juror 8 convinced a whole room of people to rethink their vote, and it saved a kids life. |
